Kelly Clarkson 2007 Tour Cancelled

Kelly Clarkson announced today that her whole summer concert tour was cancelled. Fans with concert tickets will of course receive a full refund. Below is the full text from her official site.

"I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to getting out there to perform for y'all. In the craziness of the music business, performing is what I look forward to doing the most, so it really is disappointing for me to have to tell you that I won't be coming out to tour this summer. The fact is that touring is just too much too soon.

But I promise you that we're going to get back out there as soon as is humanly possible to give you a show that will be even better.

Thanks for all of your love and continued support."

— Kelly

Check out this article

I just found this blog concerning baseball (the Red Sox in particular) in regards to the ever changing business aspect of it. Many fans don't realize that their beloved team is only there to generate a large sum of money, its not a non-profit organization.

Ticket Laws: Here we go again....

Below is an article straight out of the Boston Communist.

State hears ticket-scalping complaint
Objections by broker's lawyer dismissed

By Bruce A. Mohl, Globe Staff | April 19, 2007

A state hearing officer yesterday showed little sympathy for a ticket broker's claim that legal technicalities bar a consumer's complaint about tickets being resold illegally at many times face value.
Article Tools

The complaint was filed by Dorchester consumer activist Colman Herman against Higs Cityside Tickets Inc. of Boston. Yesterday's action appears to be the first time the state Department of Public Safety has ever held a disciplinary hearing involving one of the ticket resellers it licenses and regulates.

Herman argued that Higs Cityside violated the state's antiscalping law last year by offering to sell him a Boston Red Sox ticket with a face value of $130 for $825 and a John Mayer concert ticket with a face value of $44 for $330.

The antiscalping law requires people in the business of reselling tickets to be licensed and bars them from charging more than $2 above face value, plus certain service charges and business expenses.

"On its face, that's a clear violation of the state's antiscalping law," Herman told hearing officer Antoinette Rodney , who usually hears complaints about building code violations. Herman has urged Rodney to discipline Higs Cityside.

But Robert L. Allen Jr. , the attorney for Higs Cityside, said a violation of the antiscalping law is triggered only if tickets are actually sold for more than the legal amount. In his testimony, Herman said he never actually purchased the tickets.

Rodney, the hearing officer, refused to dismiss the complaint and said she'll issue a decision within 60 days. She also ignored a series of procedural objections raised by Allen, who said Rodney was changing the rules of the hearing process to the detriment of his client.

"We're talking about the livelihood of two individuals here," he said.

Michael Deamicis , one of the two owners of Higs Cityside, testified that his website last year did offer a $130 Green Monster ticket to a Red Sox-Baltimore Orioles game for $825. But Deamicis said the ticket didn't belong to him and he didn't know who actually owned it. He indicated many brokers list tickets on their websites that belong to other brokers.

The 1924 antiscalping law, after years of being ignored, is suddenly the center of controversy. In addition to his complaint against Higs Cityside, Herman is suing Admit One Ticket Agency Inc. of Weymouth in Quincy District Court. Boston police are also arresting ticket scalpers around Fenway Park, and the New England Patriots are suing StubHub Inc., a San Francisco ticket reseller, in Suffolk Superior Court.

After the hearing, Herman dismissed the legal challenges by Higs Cityside. "Because they know they're wrong, they're looking for hypertechnicalities to weasel out of obeying the law and being held accountable," he said.

Allen noted that those "technicalities" are real and make the Herman complaint a poor test of the antiscalping law. He said there are many problems with the law.

"Clearly this is an issue that's going to have to be addressed by the Legislature," he said.

Lawmakers have filed a number of ticket-resale bills with proposals ranging from a $10 cap on mark ups to no restrictions at all on mark ups.

Letter from eBay

I received the following message from ebay,

Take Action Against Laws That Reduce Ticket Availability

Today in your state capital, proposals for legislation are being drafted that claim to support an open market for buying and selling concert or sporting event tickets. But these proposals also include a variety of controls that will govern how you can buy or sell, what you can charge, or who can sell the ticket for you.

Some of these proposals would even allow corporations like Ticketmaster to decide how and when you can resell your ticket. They support "venue authorization" which would allow Ticketmaster and the venue to decide whether or not to allow the ticket to be resold. Free market advocates vigorously oppose this idea because it allows corporate interests (instead of fans and small businesses) to control the secondary market.

The truth is that these proposals all lead to a market that drives down supply and prices up--and that hurts consumers and sellers alike. Most other states allow ticket free trade, which benefits both fans and small ticket businesses by giving them access to more tickets at lower prices.

If you'd like to see more tickets to your favorite sporting events and concerts, please write your state elected representatives today. Urge them to support an open market that allows YOU to decide how and when to sell or buy a ticket.

Take action now!

Sincerely,

eBay Government Relations

Fenway Scalpers

Where have all the Red Sox ticket scalpers gone? Lets analyze the situation. The Red Sox are holding back even more tickets for day of game sales. With ticket scalpers on the street often times selling tickets for less than the box office, they pose a major threat to the red sox ticket office. No longer will you be able to buy a ticket for half face value as the Red Sox will be peddling the more expensive tickets, a major threat that brings to mind the Microsoft anti-trust case.

Two Fan Bases Cause Red Sox Ticket Shortage

As the normal devoted Red Sox fan attend games at Fenway this year an additional fan base is also in attendance. The extra fans of course are from Japan supporting the Red Sox's new pitcher Dice-K. Before the Red Sox acquired Dice-K, there was already a steep shortage of Red Sox tickets in supply and now that flights from Japan are coming in the ticket shortage is at its worst. The near $2000 per person it costs to fly here from Japan is nothing to these new Red Sox fans. Japanese tour groups are also looking to acquire Red Sox tickets so that they can give a historic tour of Boston and Fenway.

The game will go on.

The Red Sox have decided to attempt to play their game versus the Mariners even if they are cut short or inturrupted by rain delays. Many ticket holders such as myself are frustrated as no fan wants to watch a game in the rain. Hopefully the weather will clear up and a Red Sox win will result.

Scalping Crackdown

Boston Police reported that they caught 7 ticket scalpers at fenway park yesterday, on opening day. They claim that today, for the first game dice k will be pitching at fenway park, more police will be on hand to make arrests. When will they realize that doing so will mean fans can't go see a game with a ticket well below face. The fair market value of tickets on the street will no longer be a factor in ticket pricing and fans will end up paying more overall for less than popular games (Red Sox Vs. Devil Rays). Wouldn't the police be put to better use solving the problem of rampant murders in the city of Boston? Yes of course they would. However those communities don't pay for extensive boston police details as the Boston Red Sox do.

Conigliaro's Corner

The Red Sox opened up the season with the new "Conigliaro's Corner". A section of Fenway park built specifically to give fans access to day of game tickets. Remember sitting in right field grandstand and promptly seeing your chiropractor afterwards? Well now a seat that bad will only cost $20, provided you make the trip into Boston and actually can get a ticket the day of. Print-At-Home tickets and advanced mailings of these tickets is not available for this section.

"IMPORTANT: To ensure that the families who purchase the tickets actually use them, the Red Sox will not allow tickets to be mailed in advance or delivered via print@home technology. Tickets must be picked up by the purchaser of record on the day of the game when the gates open. Fans picking up the tickets will be required to enter directly into Fenway Park."

Beginning on May 12th the whole lot of 200 tickets for every Saturday Red Sox game will be sold only to Red Sox Nation members. A membership that costs $100.

Red Sox Ticket Toss

The Boston Red Sox have just introduced a new ticket toss feature which will let fans send their tickets to their friends.

"Ticket Toss allows season ticket holders to e-mail their tickets to whomever they wish, for any game in their season ticket package. All you need to toss your tickets to a friend is an active season ticket account and a name and e-mail address of the recipient."

A great idea that other teams such as the New York Yankees had embraced for awhile. One drawback is that you need to be a Red Sox season ticket holder.
